Requirements for the Doctoral Dissertation

1.1. Recommended length for the doctoral dissertation is 4-10 units of the 40 000 typed characters.2. The following are the main sections of the dissertation:
2.1. Introduction. It should cover substantiated research problem, relevance of the research study, research aim and objectives, novelty and significance of work, and statements that will be presented and supported in the dissertation. Recommended length of this section is up to 3 pages.
2.2. Review of the Research Literature (Literature Review). It should include the description of the research studies conducted in Lithuania and abroad on the topic of the dissertation and demonstrate a potential input of the author of the dissertation.
2.3. Methodology. This section should present methodology and (or) methods and discuss their reliability and limitations.
2.4. Research results.  This section should present research results and their discussion, evaluation of their reliability as well as their relationship with the results of other researchers.
2.5. Conclusion. It should reflect the main statements of the dissertation and provide solutions for objectives or problems presented in the Introduction section.
2.6. The list of the referenced (cited) literature.
2.7. Acknowledgements of the help with research work might be positioned before the Introduction section.
3. The doctoral student should prepare a detailed dissertation Summary either in Lithuanian or in a foreign language. If the dissertation is written in Lithuanian, the Summary section should be prepared in a foreign language with a detailed summary in Lithuanian. If the dissertation is written in a foreign language, the Summary section should be prepared in Lithuanian with a detailed summary in a foreign language. The length of the summary in a single language is not less than 40000 typed characters.
3.1. The Summary section should present the research problem analyzed in the dissertation, research aims and objectives, scientific novelty of work, research methods, the most important results and conclusions supported by these results, and include a list of the student’s articles on the topic of dissertation and a brief introduction of the doctoral student him/herself.
3.2. The list of the doctoral student’s scientific publications on the topic of dissertation indicating the title of the journal (edition), year, volume, pages, and co-authors should be provided at the end of Summary section. The brief introduction of the doctoral student must include information about his/her university studies, qualification, professional activities, and internships in the Lithuanian institutions and abroad.
4. The first cover page of the dissertation should be consistent with the Example #1 of the Supplement #1. The first page should contain the following:
4.1. Institution where the doctoral dissertation is defended;
4.2. First and last names of the doctoral student;
4.3. Dissertation title;
4.4. “Doctoral dissertation” text;
4.5. Science field, science discipline and its code;
4.6. Place (city) and year.
5. The second cover page of the dissertation must be consistent with the Example #2 of the Supplement #1. The second cover page should contain the following:
5.1. Place and timeframe of preparing the dissertation and legal basis for implementing the doctoral program;
5.2. If dissertation is externally defended, “Externally defended dissertation” text should be included;
5.3. Scientific advisor and consultant (if applicable) of the doctoral student. Information about the advisor and consultant(s) is provided in the following order: current pedagogical/scientific title, scientific qualification, first and last names, the main place of work (full name), science field, science discipline and its code. If the dissertation advisor was changed, a previous advisor and period of his/her work should be indicated.
6. The first cover page of the dissertation Summary must be consistent with the Example#3 of the Supplement #1. It should contain the following:
6.1. Institution where the doctoral dissertation is defended;
6.2. First and last names of the doctoral student;
6.3. Dissertation title;
6.4. “Summary of doctoral dissertation” text;
6.5. Science field, science discipline and its code. If the doctor’s degree is awarded for science sub-discipline, the name and code of this sub-discipline is specified;
6.6. Place (city) and year.
7. The second cover page of the dissertation summary must be consistent with the Example #4 of the Supplement #1. It should contain the following:
7.1. Place and timeframe of preparing the dissertation and legal basis for implementing the doctoral program;
7.2. If dissertation is externally defended, “Externally defended dissertation” text should be included;
7.3. Scientific advisor and consultant (if applicable) of the doctoral student. Information about the advisor and consultant(s) is provided in the following order: current pedagogical/scientific title, scientific qualification, first and last names, the main place of work (full name), science field, science discipline and its code. If the dissertation advisor was changed, a previous advisor and period of his/her work should be indicated.
7.4. Name of the dissertation Defense Board;
7.5. The dissertation Defense Board Chair and members. Information about the Board members is provided in the following order: current pedagogical/scientific title, scientific qualification, first and last names, the main place of work (full name), science field, science discipline and its code.
7.6. Date and place (full address) of the dissertation defense;
7.7. Date of submitting the Summary;
7.8. Institutions where the dissertation might be accessed in the library.
8. If the doctoral dissertation or its Summary section is prepared in a foreign language, the second cover page in Lithuanian should be enclosed. The following translation of the terms is recommended:
8.1. Daktaro disertacija (Lithuanian) – Doctoral dissertation (English) – Doktordissertation (German) – Thèse de doctorat (French) – Докторская дисcертация (Russian).
8.2. Daktaro disertacijos santrauka (Lithuanian) – Summary of doctoral dissertation (English) – Zusammenfassung der Doktordissertation (German) – Résumé de la Thèse de Doctorat (French) - Резюме докторской диcсертациu (Russian).
